Raglan is the region’s great chill out spot. Drawn by its relaxed vibe, superb waves and rugged landscape Raglan is a popular destination for artists, surfers and local weekend holiday makers alike. Raglan’s bohemian atmosphere and idyllic coastal setting makes it the perfect spot to while away an afternoon browsing amongst the boutique cafes and shops, lazing on the beach or kayaking on the harbour. While those with more adventurous activities in mind can take a short drive from the town to the beaches that make the area a surfing mecca, including Manu Bay which has one of the longest left-hand breaks in the world.
The harbour provides a tranquil spot for kayaking or a harbour cruise or if it’s the wild untamed nature of the west coast you’re after there is plenty of that on offer too or on a fishing boat. While inland, Bridal Veil Falls, which plunges 55m, is an inspiring sight when you take the walk to the pools below. With all this natural beauty, it’s no wonder that artisans and creative people flock to the area. This creativity is on show in the town’s galleries, studios and markets, and buying a souvenir usually also means buying something distinctively local and all the more memorable.

Bridal Viel Falls – The Bridal Veil Falls walk is an easy 10 minute walk to the top and 30 minute walk to the bottom, through native bush, following the Pakoka River for most of the way, to two viewing platforms at the top, both providing stunning vistas and ample photo opportunities of the plunging white falls flanked by grey rock and green bush. Looking down to the base of the waterfall, you will see soft sandstone rocks, worn away by the water to form a large amphitheatre. A steep set of steps leads down to the bottom of the falls. From here there is another magnificent view, directly across the pool and up at the falls.
Raglan Township – Raglan (Maaori name: Whaingaroa) is a coastal town to the west of Hamilton. With three surf beaches and a beautiful natural harbor, it’s known for its famous surf breaks, arts and crafts, fashion, cafes and restaurants. Raglan is also an attractive base for a number of artists and it hosts a wide range of entertainment events throughout the year.
Raglan Surfing School – The emphasis is on fun and safety, to ensure a pleasurable and safe ocean experience. Classes are designed to be mentally and physically interactive. During the initial 3 hour lesson, beginners are taken through the fundamentals of surfing, ocean awareness, etiquette, and water safety. The Raglan Surf School has developed and integrated an innovative system of dry land surf board models that allow the Student to experience surfboard dynamics prior to entering the water. RSS is the only surf school in NZ incorporating this interactive teaching technique. Individuals can be taken from riding the whitewater to gliding along open faced ground swells in just a few easy lessonslearn how to surf at Raglan Surf School, in just one short lesson you will be experience the thrill of riding the waves.

Raglan – The ocean waves that roll into Raglan, New Zealand have forged the coastline into sandy beaches and steep cliffs. The area’s magical scenery, wide harbours and intricate coves make it one of the premier North Island attractions for people who enjoy fun out on the water.
While Raglan is most well-known for being a surfing mecca, due to Manu Bay having one of the longest left-hand surf breaks in the world (link to surfing page) there are also plenty more aquatic activities on offer.
Swimming in Raglan. Raglan is home to some great swimming spots. The fun starts at the estuary footbridge, where children and adults alike can take a refreshing plunge into the water while just over the bridge is Raglan’s family beach, Te Kopua – a popular spot for a dip and a picnic.
A little further around the coast you’ll find Ngarunui Beach, also known as Ocean Beach, and the famous Raglan surf spots of Manu Bay and Whale Bay. Ngarunui is a classic sandy surf beach and one of the Waikato region’s most popular for swimming.
