Description

Highlights

Raglan is the region’s great chill out spot. Drawn by its relaxed vibe, superb waves and rugged landscape Raglan is a popular destination for artists, surfers and local weekend holiday makers alike. Raglan’s bohemian atmosphere and idyllic coastal setting makes it the perfect spot to while away an afternoon browsing amongst the boutique cafes and shops, lazing on the beach or kayaking on the harbour. While those with more adventurous activities in mind can take a short drive from the town to the beaches that make the area a surfing mecca, including Manu Bay which has one of the longest left-hand breaks in the world.

With all this natural beauty, it’s no wonder that artisans and creative people flock to the area. This creativity is on show in the town’s galleries, studios and markets, and buying a souvenir usually also means buying something distinctively local and all the more memorable.

Experience New Zealand’s stunning natural bush at twilight with our local Maaori guides as they take you back in time and share the stories of their Tainui peoples’ connection with this special place, Bridal Veil Falls (Waireeinga).

Hear the welcoming call (karanga) and challenge (wero), and be enthralled by your guides’ magical stories of myths and legends as you make your way along the bush track to one of New Zealand’s most spectacular waterfalls. Descend the steps to feel the power and spirit (wairua) of the falls as you’re captivated by its magnificence whilst immersed in the beauty of song (waiata).

Discover the wonders of nature and learn about the flora and fauna and how these treasures (taonga) were used in the past and are being protected for the future. As daylight slips away, be entertained by powerful song and performance (kapa haka) through which more tales and traditions are told. This is an intimate, interactive and engaging experience for all to enjoy.

Share in the spirit of Waireinga falls through an hour authentic Maaori cultural experience from her kaitiaki. An easy walk on a wheelchair accessible track at dusk with a ambience of soft light and Maaori stories of the past and present that will invoke and connect you to the spirit of nature.

Be stunned by the beautiful hand-crafted cloaks made of feathers modelled during your experience often wore at weddings, witness a fierce warrior battle with warriors in traditional Maori dress wielding taiaha (long-handled wooden weapons), warriors appearing from the bush along with many other rituals such as the Poi dance, traditional dances and song and the traditional war dance the Haka.

Toi Hauāuru Studio Experience

A fascinating insight and a unique opportunity to see the stunning arts and designs by one of New Zealand’s leading contemporary Maori visual artists Simon Te Wheoro and Jamie Haenga. Enjoy wonderful art works from Sculptures, carvings and pounamu (greenstone) items to paintings, earrings, pendants and kete bags.
